2019 CAREER DAY

The 2019 Career Day is here and it is themed TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION: OPPORTUNITIES, CHALLENGES AND THE FUTURE.

The world of work, business, education, health, community growth, finance, and human development is changing at a fast pace than we knew it a decade ago. Technology and innovation is influencing growth and development across all sectors of human life, promising enormous opportunities and arguably posing several challenges as well. Innovative products are increasingly being churned out making Nigeria attractive to the world’s venture capitalist and attracting angel investors to the country’s young and unregulated technology startups.

Businesses are now operating in an era where having a strong digital presence is essential, not only for success, but often simply for survival too. The lack of a strong digital presence is thought to be a contributing factor in the failure of many SMEs, half of which are failing in their first five years of existence. With limited marketing budgets, SMEs need to be wise about how they utilize digital technologies for maximum impact. Additionally, Digital technology is proving a vital tool in re-creating community connections. Smartphones today have more power than the computers that took man to the moon. They bring information to our fingertips, and people look to their online networks for news and ways to create change. A report said seven out of the 10 of the world’s fastest growing internet populations are in Africa. This trend is expected to re-shape the entire economies as new companies would leapfrog established technology, ideas, and infrastructure.

Experts say traditional career paths are on the way out, with jobs-for-life replaced by a new expectation among younger workers that they might hold 11 or more jobs throughout their lives. In fact, the skills we learn in the workplace will have more bearing on our future employability than the places where we studied or the previous positions we’ve held according to the findings of the Human Capital Report 2016, and this isn’t limited to the skills we’ve already learned, but includes those we will learn, and want to learn.

The 2019 Career Day will therefore provide a knowledge exchange and transfer experience that will empower youths to explore innovative ideas for tackling challenges in education, job creation, employment and building strong sustainable communities. It will inspire cross fertilization of ideas in different sectors while guiding them to take advantage of these opportunities. It will also influence government and policy makers to create spaces for new opportunities and innovations. This and more, we are convinced will create a future for young people and enhance their productivity in a sustainable manner.
