Hi!
My name is Brenda Effiom. Early enough, I was fortunate to discover how volunteering helped to build resilient communities and improved the lives of others. This discovery spurred my interest in volunteering and led me to dive neck-deep in several community projects that helped to build my passion in community development.
My first attempt at volunteering was in my local church where my organizational and planning skills were brought to bear. Seeing the results my efforts yielded for the church gave me immense satisfaction and I went further to volunteer for several organizations. My involvement in the advocacy got the domestication of the Child’s Right Act which later birthed the Children’s Parliament in C.R.S was a remarkable experience in my journey as a volunteer which I continue to remain proud of. Later on, I went ahead to join the Girls’ Power Initiative (GPI).
Considering all the numerous projects I took part in, the A-State-Fit-For-a-Child project is one I can never forget in a hurry where I served as chaperone and facilitator at age 16.
However, in building resilient communities, my volunteer experience The Bridge Leadership Foundation comes to mind. One of my best experiences would be the LCD Program in Odukpani LGA of CRS. This project gave me the opportunity to interface with young people from rural communities with little or no basic amenities but are striving to get an education in order to better their lives and society. I engaged them on how to set goals, build their self-esteem in spite of unfavorable conditions, and take advantage of available opportunities to further enhance their potentials.
I remain immensely grateful for all the opportunities I’ve had to impact the lives of people through volunteering especially through my work with The Bridge Leadership Foundation.
