Our airwaves came alive in September with a powerful radio conversation on the theme “Beyond One Language: Is Monolingual Education Failing Us?”
The episode featured Odu Ebam, Logistics Supervisor at ECM Terminals Ltd, and Victor Bisong, Founder of Social Advocacy Debate Network, who both shared thought-provoking perspectives. They reminded us that while education must prepare children to thrive in a globalized world, it should not come at the cost of losing native languages and cultural identity.
The conversation highlighted an important truth. Education is not just about academic excellence, it is also about identity, confidence and adaptability. Parents, educators and policymakers all have a role to play in creating a balance that ensures children stay rooted in their heritage while equipping them with the skills and languages to compete globally.
The big lesson was clear: if the next generation is to flourish, learning must value both the local and the global, preserving culture while preparing for the future.
