The 2022 Leadership and Community Development Programme for students held across 5 Local Government Areas in Cross River State from May 23rd to May 27th, 2022 – Obubra, Ikom, Etung, Boki-West and Boki-East, where we are currently implementing the programme this year. The Host schools were; Community Secondary School – Apiapum, Government Secondary School – Ikom, Etung Comprehensive Secondary School – Effraya, Boki Comprehensive Secondary School, Okundi and Buentsebe Secondary School, Wula.
The Leadership and Community Development (LCD) Programme support students in public secondary schools in rural communities, with essential academic, leadership and life skills required to cope with life’s challenges and become agents of community development. It also equips these students with the right qualities to be effective promoters of good leadership and community service. This year’s LCD Programme was proudly supported by Aspire Coronation Trust (ACT) Foundation.
This year’s workshop trained a total number of 501 students across these communities. The Modules for the students’ workshop were on Leadership, Self-esteem, Goal Setting and Career Planning which were handled by staff of the foundation, trained corps members and teachers in each LGA. Activities to monitor students’ understanding of the modules were conducted in the form of questions, answers, remarks and contributions. Students who demonstrated a clear understanding of the topics were rewarded with gifts such as mathematical sets, exercise books and other educational materials.
The climax of this workshop was the mindset shift expressed by these students and the eagerness in their eyes to facilitate the needed change as they returned to their localities, beginning in their schools. It is safe to say that an era of change-drivers has emerged
The programmes met objectives and the achievement was a humongous accomplishment in community engagement. We are thankful to ACT Foundation for supporting the LCD Programme, the Cross River State Ministry of Education for its endorsement, the Education Secretaries for grassroot communication, the NYSC Cross River State Secretariat, our distinguished Board Members and our Volunteers (the corps members and teachers) for their support.
